Jeff Sampson & Sara Ayers - Thrice Thy Heart Shall Broken Be - Atmoworks (2006)

3 tracks. Running time 19:11

Vocalist and musician Jeff Sampson who's involved with several other collaborations, including Embracing the Glass, has this time teamed up with vocalist Sara Ayers to create a short but haunting EP with the baroque title Thrice Thy Heart Shall Broken Be.

The most amazing thing about the three journeys on this EP is that all the ethereal sounds are created from voices. First up is the title track “Thrice Thy Heart Shall Broken Be” where the atmosphere is set by ephemeral sonic clouds of dreamy whisperous tones and gossamer wordless vocals floating in and out. It's eerie as if being in the grounds of a abandoned building at night where brief moonlit shadows are glimpsed. Humming chants add to the sense of melancholy as though we're hearing the laments of disembodied souls.

The mood becomes more contemplative and peaceful in “Not Even All the Stars”. Spectral pads are heard behind monastic style vocals that shift between being wordless and almost spoken. Imagine we're witnessing a sacred ceremony in an echoey building like a large church. Then finishing off the EP is “Thrice Thy Heart... (Sleepwalking Mix)” in which distorted refrains and vocalised drones resonate deeply before fading out to a quiet end.

Thrice Your Heart Shall Broken Be has left a lasting impression on me. It's the most magical and mystical amalgam of different vocal effects that I've heard.
