Freud - The Journey - Tantajo Records (2006)

11 tracks. Running time 50:02

Freud is the recording name of Ingo Hauss, a German songwriter and producer. The Journey is Freud's second album and features the lovely vocals of Cora O'Donovan and Maria Sanchez. Most tracks contain sung lyrics set against lush acoustic and electronic instrumentation. The result being a relaxing album with world music aspects and a clear vision of its own - but what I suspect are influences of Enigma and Enya.

Ingo has explored a variety of styles yet created an album which has a sense of wholeness rather than just feeling like a collection of disparate pieces. There's a Celtic touch on “Eden”, the Enigma-esque “Mystery Moon”, a continental sensuousness on “Garden of Love”, and a Spanishness on “El Jardin Del Amor” - thanks mainly to Maria's seductive Latin voice.

Some albums contain one track that stands out above the rest and captivates the listener immediately. Here it is the wonderful “Eden” where Cora's smoky edged crystal clear vocals sing heartwarming and uplifting lyrics. A very pleasing melody line similar to the main theme of Mark Knopfler's soundtrack Local Hero plays through much of the piece in both an electronic and Celtic flute guise. Percussion and guitar strumming add rhythmic elements to round off this excellent song which usually has me hitting the repeat button.

On the whole the mood of the album is upbeat and positive, and ideal for chilling out to. Of the instrumental pieces “The Great Crossing” works best. A choreographed collage of dramatic orchestral style strings leads up to a percussive beating rhythm and some occasional rippling electronics that reminded me a little of Space's classic EM track “The Magic Fly”. Romantic airy effects and strings then come in to take the piece onwards.

On The Journey there are some great tunes to be discovered which I'm sure will appeal to listeners who enjoy the likes of Enigma, Enya, and Ginkgo Garden.
