4 tracks. Running time 15:25
I last encountered Tor Lundvall's music in his “ghost ambient” album Empty City. As a taster of his forthcoming 4 CD set The Seasons Unfold this sampler contains selected tracks, including some alternate versions. Ghostly and echoey piano as if the sound of somebody practising in a far off room begins “Whir”. Over the middle of the piece new piano refrains become prominent while ethereal pads and distant airy wraith like vocals haunt the soundscape. In contrast, “29” begins with low piano notes making a sedate repeating melody and gentle whistles pass across the soundscape. Then unexpectedly a spectral voice comes in slowly singing lyrics. A thrumming rhythm and clack of sticks in “The Backyard” create a ritualistic aura for more sung and ethereal wordless vocals to add atmosphere to. The vocals are somewhat doleful which lends the piece a sense of forlorn remembrance. Last up is the instrumental “November's Fields” where a simple repeating refrain, echoing tinkles, spooky notes, and stuttering effects create a vision of bleak and monotonous landscapes. A pre-release sampler is a great way to attract attention to an album and give listeners a chance to decide if it'll be to their taste. Tor is continuing in the “ghost ambient” vein, but the addition of vocals, albeit with a ghostly edge along with the music, may not appeal to everyone. |
