Deep Imagination - Scapes - Syngate (2005)

8 tracks. Running time 48:46

Deep Imagination is the solo project of Thorsten Sudler-Mainz who is the founder and one half of Art of Infinity. The title of this ambient work makes it clear this is a collection of scapes - the themes range from the tangible to conceptual. In style this is quite different to Thorsten's work on Art of Inifinity's Dimension Universe also reviewed here this month.

Most of the tracks consist of flowing/drifting ambience from a palette of silvery sonics, though a couple of pieces employ some rhythm and melody. Also worth noting is the track lengths are well proportioned between about four and ten minutes, so that each scape has enough room to be explored but without it dragging on too long which can happen in the ambient genre.

The first track “Moonscape” is a great way to start our musical and mental journey. Metallic slithering effects layered with reverbing drones and waves of airy taut synth lines flow along. Other effects like glissandoes briefly add to the sense of being on a uninhabited cold moon with its striking but frigid landscape. In contrast, “Timescape” begins in a restrained drifting ambient atmosphere only to then morph into a melodic and rhythmic section incorporating drum effects and big echoing bell like notes.

I think listeners will make the most of this album in a quiet dimly lit room so you can get caught up in the images and inner being that is conveyed by the sounds. Especially with the refined piece “Sunscape” where a warm drone like the constant heat of the sun acts as a backdrop for sparkling tones like distant solar prominences. The piece slowly builds in intensity and sees the addition of bumping bass notes and assorted graceful shiny sounds.

It turns out that I already owned a copy of Scapes before getting a review copy. Until now it wasn't an album I'd played more than once and I'm glad for the opportunity to revisit it. Overall I rate it as a good mix of inspiring, partly abstract, and occasionally harsh toned ambience.
