Liquid Mind - Relax - Real Music (2007)

8 tracks. Running time 65:23

There could be no more apt title for a Liquid Mind – aka Chuck Wild -- album than Relax. Comprising some of his favourite tracks from previous albums, and one unreleased piece, it's intended as a sampler for those unfamiliar with his peaceful music.

The pace is slow and serene, the sounds warm and comforting. If angels sang without words then maybe this is what they'd sound like. Chuck's style is to brush the soundscape with a limited yet nuanced sonic palette, sometimes with an added vocal tint. Often it feels as though we're floating through a heavenly environment where the music emanates from everywhere but nowhere.

In “Serenity” the hymnal washes move like a slowly undulating sea. Airy “ahhh” timbres mix with vaguely orchestral strings to create a stretched out symphonic feel. From the same album – Liquid Mind V: Serenity -- the piece “Awakening” has slightly dramatic string washes and a pitter-patter backdrop in the early and final minutes.

One unreleased piece is “I Am Willing”. There are no surprises in store here since it fits perfectly within the Liquid Mind canon. Various washes play in harmony in a manner which creates a sense of narrative, and there's the ubiquitous lullaby quality formed by the gentle rocking motion of the music. Indeed, the final track “Lullaby For Grownups” explores this aspect explicitly. All the usual ingredients are here, but the washes seem to stretch further before changing direction.

Before this CD dropped through my letterbox I hadn't listened to a Liquid Mind album for several months. It was an almost magical experience to hear this graceful music again. In our fast world it's important to find time to relax, and I can't think of many better aural companions than Relax.
