Vic Hennegan - Pure Creative Spirit - Alien Tribes Music (2004)

6 tracks. Running time 48:20

In contrast to his ambient album Desert God, we find that Vic Hennegan's Pure Creative Spirit is a more energetic offering that combines EM and dance music sensibilities. Given that he's played desert parties and raves this is surely natural musical territory for him to explore. This is a very electronic work that has hints of world music, contains some vocals, and makes use of various samples - including some from Peter Gabriel.

Getting the album started is "Movin". Resonant tones pulled and stretched like elastic are heard from the beginning and throughout. A jiggling melody of twangy notes then comes in along with repeated brief vocals by someone sounding remarkably like Jon Anderson. A little while later the track gets into full flow with metallic percussive rhythms and fast tambourine.

Besides the actual music one good thing about this joyful and carefree album is that the tracks go on long enough (they range between six and just over ten minutes) to get blissed out on the tunes. In this respect the most hypnotic piece is "Rhythms of Sanctuary" which for the first few minutes is instrumental with rhythmic beats, syncopated brushy percussion of what I think are cymbals, other sonic bric-a-brac, and an emerging melody. Later in an electronically filtered voice performs peculiar and seemingly ethnic chants or lyrics.

There's a hint of world music pervading much of Pure Creative Spirit which reminded me a little of Frank Van Bogaert's Colours. One thing I did imagine is a nighttime beach party with people from many different backgrounds dancing and losing themselves in the music. A track with a particular world feel to it is "Passion Peace & Pleasure" (great sentiments, btw) which is very beat driven with Arabesque drums, staccato synths and snaking melodies. An enchanting piece that may have you reaching for the repeat button.

I really enjoy listening to Pure Creative Spirit even though dance music isn't usually my thing. It's a vibrant work full of life that is more, ahem, creative and melodic than typical beat driven dance music.
