Antanas is the moniker of Nenad Antanasijevic from Belgrade. Magellan is a summary of his work to date and follows three self-released CDs in the 1990s. This latest CD is a collection of song length EM/ambient/experimental pieces that have a style unique to Antanas and yet reflect his major influences of artists such as Jarre, Vangelis, Deep Forest, and Tangerine - to name a few. The opening track “Timeless Discovery” starts off with the sound of chirping insects and washes continually flying across the soundfield. A slow simple melody is formed by light notes which seem to fall from above then bounce briefly, then a sludgey percussive rhythm adds structure to the piece. All the tracks contain some rhythm and melody and span moods from dramatic, uplifting, to fun. And in some tracks like “Eastern World” there's a combination of moods. Here a warm reverbing drone plays against Eastern sounding bell-like notes creating a contemplative mood. Then unexpectedly the piece changes and becomes hypnotically rhythmic with layered percussion. Quivering flutes or whistles, plucked string glissandoes, anxious synth refrains, and snippets of an oriental female voice make this a unique track! For pure enjoyment I recommend the track “The Velocity of Love” which is a cover version of said piece by Suzanne Cianni. Sleigh bell percussion and gaseous synth lines keep a nice pace for the pretty harmonised melody which is wonderful and occasionally sassy; this should mellow even a flinty hearted soul. At first I wasn't sure about Magellan because it felt like a mish-mash of styles. Yet after a couple of listening sessions I found it growing on me. Okay, so it doesn't break any new ground but is quite enjoyable if persisted with. |
