6 tracks. Running time 5:13:03
Leave That World Behind is another massive mp3 album by David Wayne Higgins, aka Oenyaw. It consists of six tracks of varying lengths between fifteen minutes and nearly seventy eight! The liner notes give some brief background on each one, and surprisingly there's a track that is Oenyaw's version of heavy metal/industrial. The medium length track “The Tutor of Achilles” opens the album. A drone humming like overhead power cables starts up and slowly morphs along with other subtle drones over the course of twenty six minutes. Oenyaw's foray into a heavy-metal/industrial style is heard on the piece “Eye Ten” - this is “The camshaft's view of of a trip down the highway” as he describes it. A chugging rhythm that made me think of a steam train's fat puffing sounds plays alongside metallic activity. The metallic sounds gradually become more musical and almost melodic. Eventually the rhythm fades back and then dies off and we're left with harsh drones erratically orbiting around each other. Most sonically pleasing of all the tracks is “Cicadas Lullaby”. Accordion like shimmering and humming drones dip in and out of the soundscape as though the sounds are being interrupted by breaths of wind. Spectral effects like barely discerned disembodied voices then ease their way in to add an otherworldly quality. Towards the end of the track there are some quieter and more mysterious sections. It's getting difficult to sum up Oenyaw's albums beyond what I've already said about the others. Leave That World Behind is kind of interesting slowly developing long form ambient that will have most appeal to hardcore ambient fans. |
