10 tracks. Running time 47:03
I can't tell you anything about who the musician is on this CD, the only information I could find was on websites not in English. It's been released on the same label as Indra's work and I think Byblos may too be Romanian. What I can tell you is that it's upbeat synth pop in the vein of Jarre's era from Magnetic Fields onwards. Almost all the tracks are uptempo and upbeat with lots of rippling synth lines and pointy note melodies. For me this brought back memories of the 1970s when Jarre, Hot Butter, and Space released synth pop songs. First up is “Trance”, a hypnotic piece where pulsating rhythmic and melodic refrains and ticking percussion make this a good intro to the album. The second track “Waves of Light” proceeds in the same vein except but with the addition of drum programming adding some beats. Next is “Ocean Love” which acts as an interlude between the lively tracks; a delicate piano melody evoking a feeling of lost love plays out against a subtle backdrop of waves washing on a beach and stylised bird sounds. The rest of the album continues in a lively manner. All the tracks are pleasant enough but none stand out either. Bringing it to a close is the contemplative piece “Plai Romanesc”. Panpipe sounds are used to create a thoughtful melody – more like the European style of Gheorghe Zamfir than the Andean renditions of Incantation – while synth pads fill out the backdrop. Energy is an enjoyable and undemanding album of poppy electronic music that will at least have your foot tapping and head nodding in time. Though it's not a close homage to Jarre (unlike the works of Mike Andrews, for example) it harks back to that age of electronic music. |
