Dreams of Myspace is a concept brought to life by EM veteran Robert Schroeder to spread the word about some of the great music that can be found by artists on the Myspace website. The full roster of artists on this CD is Kristalium, Guido Negraszus, Alpha Lyra, Mac Mavis, VFXdesigner, McCartnotron, Nightbirds, Nattefrost, Mc-Honert, Dust Free, and A.D.S.R. The album traverses EM, electronica, ambient, downtempo, chillout, and even a bit of techno/dance. Kristalium is a French musician who gets the honour of the opening track, and has two pieces on the album. First of these is “The Last Chance” which features a wonderful repeating crystalline refrain panning across the soundscape like a shiny sonic searchlight. This is set against a beat and tambourine rhythm and a woman's voice speaking as a computer. It's no surprise to find that Michael Cretu of Enigma is one of Kristalium's influences since this track has a understated sensual aspect. Another lovely track is “Journey to Fairyland II” by Guido Negraszus. The calming sound of water lapping on a shore and spiritual sounding synth lines and pads open to a simple laid back piano melody. Mid-tempo percussion keeps the piece moving and a plucked string melody comes in to complement the piano. Marking a change in style is the flowing/drifting ambient piece “Live Improvisation” by Nightbirds. Electrically charged drones give way to less intense and smoother glassy tones while brief alien squawks and calls are heard now and again. Slow melodies add to the relaxed and gorgeous atmosphere as if we're hearing music from another world. Hopefully that's given you a flavour of some of the great music waiting to be discovered on Dreams of Myspace, and the liner notes helpfully give some background info about each artist. I highly recommend this CD as an introduction to lesser known musicians who have as much to offer as the better known names. |
